KIDS AND CARTOONS
"Won't you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Streeeeet...
how to get to Sesame Streeett... how to get to Sesame Street.." Today's show has been brought to you by the letter "F" and the number "8." hehehe... man, do i feel old. "Ei-gg--ht!" I hissed through my teeth as I the last rep at the incline bench. Found this quaint little gym in Alabang last week, seven-minute walk from the office. A joke next to Fitness First, but, hey, works for me just fine. Actually kanina pa ako naiinis kay San Goku sa TV, but the owner of the gym [who had, I think, 16.5 to 17" arms and looks like a junkyard dog] wouldn't change channels. He also had a "Certified Muay Instructor" hung on the wall with his picture in it; so I decided not to push the envelop an inch further. I went about the "bakal" business and kept glancing at Goku's ridiculously defined delts and traps, and then glacing at my own, back-and-forth, back-and-forth. hehehe... I mean, hey, this is not the topic of this post; but let me just point out that even if Ronnie Coleman [a personal favorite] blasted heavy for the next hundred years, he will never come close to achieving Goku's delts. 'tanginang shoulders yan. Which brings me to my real point. Why does GMA dub its cartoons in tagalog? I mean, I love GMA and everything, but bakit puro anime na lang ang nakikita natin sa TV? Wala ng English cartoons on primetime. The last time I checked, BATMAN BEYOND and JUSTICE LEAGUE was on Studio 23. Not exactly mainstream TV these days. Okay, hey, I perfectly understand why animes have to be dubbed in tagalog but isn't there english versions of these shows? Why not show those? And where the F*** is Sesame Street?! What I'm trying to say here is these tagalog-dubbed cartoons do not help the kids learn. They have zero educational value. Nada. None. Ziltch. Except maybe "Kamehameha waaaaaaAAAAVE!!" But that doesn't even count unless the kids search the net and find out what or "who" Kamehameha really is. I was weaned on Sesame Street and Superfriends [that's what they were called back then, before JUSTICE LEAGUE came] Saturdays and Sundays were just pure delight as my chavacano "Mama" coooked polvoron [using Bear Brand] and me and the neighborhood "Dirty Dozen" [read: literally not figuratively] sat in front of the TV -- from Sesame Street to Superfriends. I cant recall how long the gap is between those two shows, but I remember before Superfriends I still managed to fall off the local aratiles tree and earned myself four quick whips on the ass. But I digress. hehehe. Back to the point. I am proud to declare that huge part of my english vocabulary and grammar I owe to these two great shows. And the gang spoke and wrote mean English too. These were gradeschoolers in a small town. And we breezed through Writing and Composition like Katrina over New Orleans. I mean, what's a poor barrior kid got to do? but force himself to learn proper english in order to understand the best cartoon shows on TV. It was a given. You learn what Superman is saying or you perish. Period. And Superman and Batman were the best speakers in the house. You learn how to construct basic but correct sentences and how to pronounce words properly from hearing their "To the Bat Cave!" and "Up, Up, and Awwaaay!" and other cheesy lines. Sesame Street is even better. Here you also learn Math and Art. and, again, PROPER English. Sesame Street spawned a generation of good speakers and writers. Jessica Zafra would not disagree. But now, what has mainstream TV got to offer? Tagalog car-f**kin-toons. Kids these days are overloaded with cartoons and yet unable to properly distinguish "he's" and "his" I say kids have to be exposed, especially those in the lower to middle class, to english in the most efficient way there is: TELEVISION. And the honchos of GMA should feel socially responsible enough to help. Instead of feeding the kids re-runs of Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT, why don't they offer more sensible cartoons? And for Pete's sake, get rid of the tagalog dubbing. I am not unpatriotic, but for crying out loud, kids have to have a good english foundation in order to fare better in later life. Do not, I repeat, do not let another generation grow up to be lovers of telenovelas and telefantasias with, godforbid, an aversion to any show which is "IN ENGLISH." The box-office earnings of the galactically-stupid "Enteng Kabisote" should be enough cause for alarm. ------ And then the huge gym owner switch the TV to another channel, showing an english show -- WWE. F***! I am outta here. Share this post (facebook, email, twitter, etc) at pagpapalain ka ng husto.

why should I learn English if I first have to learn my own language ?
but yeah on the other side I understood what you meant... it's just... I think every children have also their Rights to understand something about the topic 'cause if you know what the topic is all about, you'll understand the situations, you can also repeat and explain it. no one forces you to watch if you don't want to.. I can also say, nobody can force you to learn if you don't want to... it is your own fault if you don't (not that I'm not worried about Filipino's future..) I never learn by hard, I've learned it by my own,I don't read books that much... actually I've learned German by reading some Mangas (comics) I've learned almost all the languages I know by hearing them from the others(talking) though yeah.. I'm a dictionary fanatic ![]()
I like dora the explorer nyahaha

tanong ko lang bespren... i enjoyed watching my sassy girl (the movie), napakasimple nung story, nakakatuwa, nakakaiyak, touching, etc... baket ndi tayo makagawa ng ganong istorya? i mean, budget wise i think, ndi siya ganon kabigat, di ba? simpleng locations, simple lang siya kung tutuusin e... actors, we have good actors... we have good directors... we have good writers... pero baket wala tayong ganong movie? wala lang, naisip ko lang itanong... hehehe...

cost cutting nga... but how could they come up with beautiful scenes for encantadia/etheria? those were very expensive sets...

nice post, clonie... i agree with you, sana nga in english na rin ung cartoons kasi most kids, mahilig sa cartoons so why not be educated while they watch that? lam mo, i have this cousin, who is about 4 or 5 years old... they are often tuned in to cartoon network... ang galing mag-english grabe... he was able to absorb proper english, with correct diction and usage, by watching that... magpakwento ka nga ng spongebob e ikekwento niya in straight english ha, diretso... saka pag kinausap mo siya ng ibang bagay, tanungin ng walang kinalaman sa cartoons, he could reply in english na tama naman ang sagot nya... walang tutorial un ha, talagang nood lang ng cartoon network... niwei, un lang po...

naoobvious na kapuso ka.. when in fact ABS does the same.... hahaha..
anyway, no comment.. kasi mahilig ako sa anime.. pero minsan depende na rin sa mga bata yan eh.. my little sis and my bro love watching anime.. dubbed or not.. (they watch in AXN).. pero they seem to be more intelligent than I am.. pahiya nga ako lagi pag nagtatanong sila sa akin.. anyway, mabubuting bata mga kapatid ko.... at nakutusan ko na sila dati pag di sila nag-aaral.. pero I love what they are becoming right now.. hehehe.. enough of my sis and my bro... (after kung sabihing no comment noh..) wala na... nababangag na ako eh..nonsense na lahat ng sinasabi ko.. annex ===> ![]()

english...cartoons...
well dat depends on which cartoons... if its western cartoons den i would rili love it to be in english.. it rili sucks when its been dubbed in tagalog.. but if its japanese cartoons or best known as anime then pls dnt dubb it on english.. it sounds gay when they do that. teens bck here never watch anime thats dubbed in english.. u jst dnt feel that good ol' anime powers coming out of them when they do that. I dnt know why GMA would need to dubb animes into tagalog when its much better when its japanese.. you can still understand them when u read the translations down the screen. Its not that i dnt want Filipinos to learn english or i hate tagalog.. its jst that the show is spoiled when they do that. If they want kids to learn more english then they could jst add more english version cartoons or tv learning programs..cut a bit of anime and do that instead.. oh and there's a new version of sesame street.. its called the "elmo's world" or something.. i like the old one.. u rili do learn lots of things.. i love it when sometimes they cook cookies and stuff.. ![]()
Talking about GYM.
i got that same experience and it really sucks. The guy would have been cute but watching him concentrated on SON GOKU's show while me, having trouble adjusting that stupid bike. And no help at all.
completely! I hate it kapag tinatagalog nila yung anime, minsan pa nga yung translation nila iba dun sa totoong sinasabi. Thats why I tell my sister na cartoon network nalang panoorin niya...at least may makukuha siya.
i love cartoons alin dun ung balik bayan or 2GO... gusto ko manood ng kapamilya na mga anime b4 nood ako ng flame of recca dati un but un lang ang watch ko kasi ABS ako. mahilig me talaga cartoon i watch animax, nickelodeon, and disney...kasi icip bata me eh... ![]()
So funny you mention this. Last summer, when my youngest brothers visited the pinas, they cried and pleaded with my mom to bring them back home, and their main reason, every cartoon show they wanted to watch was in tagalog. And my poor brothers are too young to understand. They learn as they grow, but they speak mostly english.
