people overseas
Hi, im new to this forum, i just want to know who are currently staying overseas, why are you there, what is your job, how you overcome boredom, loneliness, homesickness, cul ture shock, adjustments, etc. i'll start with myself.
Im from Baguio (city pf pines) i studied in manila for 4 years before coming here in America. when i first cam here i was like a little kid lost in a big2x world, everything was new to me , specially for a guy who spent most of his life in the philippines. i was so ignorant to so many things that sometimes i felt stupid.the first month was the hardest, i was so bored, so lonely and add to that the culture shock and the feeling of uncertainty, it was like the whole world was coming down at me, and i desperately wanted to go home, i wasn't thinking about opportunity that this country has to offer,i was like "fuck that" i'm going home. my parents persuaded me to stay, and thank god i did. so i decided to stay and as months goes by i met a lot of new friends, met a lot of filipinos too, pinoys are just everywhere specially here in LA. so somehow some of the home sickness i felt was gone as i am slowly adjusting to my new environment. one of the things i had problem with was how americans speak english, i mean, i can understand english but im so used to pinoy english where we have this hard tongue accent so it gave me a little bit of trouble understanding what they're saying that sometimes i just nod my head and pretend i understood what he/she was talking about. specially black americans, they talk so fast all i understand is "hey" and "dude". i have a good pair of ears but i suddenly become deaf when they talk. me: hi, what's going on? black american: "hey" wsssp dusid comhg fstt hllerds oveddfdgsdh "dude" me: "yeah" (nodding my head pretending i understood what he said )so that's one of the problem i had to overcome when i got here and the longer i talk to them somehow my ears also adjusts to their accent. another thing i had to adjust with is the way of living, i'm used to a life where they just give me what to do dictate what to do and just do what they told you to do, here, you have to do it your own, of course i had to do it my own because i had no choice . so as i go along i slowly learn how to play the game i learned how to be independent that sometimes i fail to call my parents (to avoid sermon ) which is im guilty off, specially one time when my mom called and i failed to answer so she left a message in my voice mail, and when i got the chance to hear it this is what she said, "anak baket hindi k n tumatawag? tumawag k nman pa minsan2x nang di kmi nag aalala, nakalimot k n ha?". so when i heard my mom's message it just pinched my heart and promptly called her after.so,after a few months of staying here i decided to join the service, they flew us to texas for our training. it was one hell of a ride going through boot camp as it was the first time i was showering naked with 30 naked male in a shower room. and one of the unforgettable moment i had that i still laughed until now when it pops up in my head is when we were marching back to our barracks and that time i was so weary and tired due to lack of sleep. this is how it went:military instructor: "left, left, left, right, left" me: (marching while trying my best to stay awake) while i was marching with my flight i didn't notice that there is a pillar directly infront of us, and yes, you know what happened next i marched straight into the pillar hitting my head first. military instructor: "flight halt!" me: (oh shit) military instructor: (walks to me and stood in front of me pointing his big index finger directly to my face) "i may not have been here long enough, but that is the most stupid thing i have ever seen!" me: in my mind was (e gago k pla e! 2 hours lng tulog ko noh!!) that incident was scary that time because my instructor was 6'3 tall and a really bulky guy, heck, he can break my neck without even trying.and now looking back and thinking about it,damn, that was hilarious. after boot camp i was stationed here in Idaho, a paradise for thrill seekers and nature lovers. when i first got to this state i immediately found a filipino friend during one of our briefings. (like i said,we are just everywhere around the globe).so we decided to go to wallmart and buy all the stuff we needed and on our way back a semi truck cut through our lane and hit the front right portion of my car, just by looking on those gigantic wheels grinding and dragging my car for a few seconds was really scary. it was my first day in that state, first day of work, and my first car crash, how lucky i am. just dealing with my car insurance was a pain in the neck, i was so mad that i seek assistance in our legal office. so right now im here in this beautiful country state, doing my job as a vehicle mechanic, still learning the trade, meeting new friends and again i met some filipino guys also working in the service, all in all im contented with how my life if is running right now, im learning a lot, im trying to go back to school and get my master's degree and take advantage of the opportunities the service has to offer. how bout you guys? what's your story? Share this post (facebook, email, twitter, etc) at pagpapalain ka ng husto.

I'm in Ireland. I had the same problem about the accent. Irish accent is way difficult to understand than the american accent.
Anyway, I've been here for 3 years and 9 months. I'm planning on going home for good. Iba pa din ang pinas. =)

Nothing definite. I've been working as an auditor for almost 8 years now and I think my experience here would be a plus in my resume. My old company will hire me again, worst comes to worst =). I'm still in contact with my old masters. LOL.
I'm no longer interested in the money. I used to think that back in the day before I came here. I don't have any obligations. Why should I stick to the loneliness of the place if I can go back home and enjoy life. life is too short =) I think I've done my time living abroad. LOL

i see, i guess you just miss the feeling of camaraderie that is obviously lacking in your work place, i'd say why not take a long vacation and reflect on how you really feel. sometimes we make decision basing on the feeling we had on that particular moment. i'm just saying this because i don't want you to regret anything once your back there. and also consider the short term and long term effects of it to your career. just my 2 cents bro, it happened to me and sometimes all you need is a relaxing break to change your decision.

oh, I went home last december for 5 weeks. I just had 4 weeks off last month. mahabang panahon na un para magdecision. I made my decision na. Clear na ang utak ko.
![]() I know a lot of things about regrets and passing up opportunities. Ang alam ko lang panghihinayangan ko is I will not be able to travel as freely as I do now. But I've done my share of travelling and I just have a few places to go. After that, masaya na ako. and FYI, babae po ako.
