GMA Network switches on Internet TV channel

With the rapid growth of broadband access, leading broadcast firm GMA Network Inc. is turning to Internet television as it seeks to open new revenue streams and increase its viewership.

In a statement, the Channel 7 operator said it would launch its own Internet TV or video-on-demand service, dubbed MyGMA, on Sept. 12 to compete head-on with rival ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.’s TFC Now.

MyGMA is GMA-7’s Internet channel where shows, music videos and movies can be viewed using a PC with broadband connection anytime and anywhere. “ The choices vary from sports programs to live events, from independent films to music videos and programs from GMA and QTV to movies from GMA Films and other film companies.

“MyGMA will be the medium that will bring its high quality programs to thousands of overseas Filipinos who may not have the circumstance to subscribe to a cable or direct-to-home channel,”GMA-7 said.

MyGMA represents the third and last installment of GMA’s Internet play, which already includes leading websites gmanews.tv for news and igma.tv for entertainment.

Internet TV is a quick-to-market and relatively low investment service as it rides on existing infrastructure including broadband, ADSL, Wi-Fi, cable and satellite which makes it a valuable tool for a wide variety of service providers and content owners looking for new revenue streams.

Access to MyGMA comes in packages. Package 1 allows a 30-day access to GMA entertainment shows, news programs, and teleseryes including archives recorded in the past three months from the day of subscription while package 2 will include QTV productions to package 1.

The third package, the Day Pass, provides users access to GMA programs for one day. There are also add-ons of pay-per-view shows, teleseryes and choices of specific programs.

A major advantage of Internet TV is that it allows content delivery to a huge population with virtually no geographical limitations. — Zinnia dela Peña
