important to read: "HATE LETTER AGAINST FILIPINOS"
posted by (Sep 01, 2004 @ 12:31PM) views: 6064
This is an open letter email by Art Bell, a radio talk show host in Nevada(more info in the email itself). Here is yet another person who has taken advantage of his power and privilege to use hateful words and racial stereotypes that breed further ignorance and intolerance in our
society.

Art Bell is a talk radio host who has two shows that he broadcasts from his home in Nevada, that is rebroadcast by 400 stations across the country.

He's written 2 books. He lived in Okinawa, Japan for some years and had a radio program on the English station here. And, though it's hard to believe after reading the following letter from him, he actually has been to the Philippines (he's traveled fairly extensively around the
world).

This letter is so degrading, I think it's really important that everybody read this and not attack him, but respond to him in a civilized manner because otherwise his thoughts will be reaffirmed.

Understand that not everyone has a viewpoint like we do, and that this is an opinion of someone who hopefully can be changed only by civil actions.

THE E-MAIL............................................

Filipinos.....*make me puke* (Art Bell)
As we've all come to notice, in the past few decades, Filipinos have begun to infest the United States like some sort of disease. Their extensive involvement in the U.S. Armed Forces is proof of the trashy kind of qualities all Filipinos tend to exhibit on a regular basis. You
can see this clearly by studying the attitudes and cultural Icons of most Filipino Americans. Origins of Pinoys/Pinays: Are they really Asian? Well we've come to accept the fact the Filipinos come from a part of the world known as Southeast Asia. But the term "Asia" is used in the wrong way.

You may notice that contemporary Filipino Americans try very hard to associate themselves with groups that we know as Asian. I cannot count the number of times I have seen a 'Third World' Filipino try to connect themselves to the Chinese or Japanese people. There is no connection and
here's why. The Philippines is a Third World country.

Nothing respectable has EVER been created by Filipino people during our entire human history. Young Filipino men in America have become obsessed with "import racing". They have an enormously perverted affection for Japanese cars. It's a common phenomenon. In their minds, these Filipinos
somehow believe that they are Asian and that it somehow connects them to Japanese people and Japanese cars. They often take credit for the ingenuity of Japanese people and say how it's an "Asian thing". This term..."Asian thing" derived directly from African American slang "black
thang". "It's a black thang." "It's an Asian thang." You can see the connection.

It's even funnier that, in Japan, Filipinos are heavily discriminated against. The only Filipinos that can live successfully in Japan are the Filipino prostitutes. But that's the case for most Filipino people no matter where they live in the world. Now we've come down to this
fact...and it is a fact.

Nothing in Filipino Culture can be seen as Asian. They have no architectural, artistic, or cultural influence which is in ANY way, Asian. Thinking of the great countries in Asia such as Japan, Korea, and China there is no way you can possibly connect the Philippine Islands.

This assault by Filipino Americans to connect themselves with the great peoples of Northeast Asia is foul and disgusting. Try visiting a young Filipino's web site too. You'll see something called the "Asian IRC Ring". It has to do with the chatrooms. The most horrible thing about
this is that these TRASHY people are trying to associate themselves with Asia again!! People in Asia don't act like, this at all. What we are seeing here is the natural Filipino in it's element with full access to technology and this is how they act! You will consistently see this
behavior over and over again. Another interesting thing is that these "third world" people also frequent IRC chatrooms such as #Chinese #Japan and #Asian. They must believe that they are some how related racially or culturally to North Asians. But it's completely WRONG! There might have been some distant contact with China and even less with Japan during World War II, but these people are actually more closely related to African Americans and Mexican Americans. Do the parents of these young Filipinos know what's going on? Would they accept this? I believe
that they would and do. This is the natural "Trash" element in Filipinos manifesting itself. Nothing good has ever come from Philippines and I don't believe anything good ever will.

Recognizing your Roots (A Message to Filipinos).
To all Filipino people: Please recognize your ROOTS!
You come from the Third World! Your country is a disgusting and filthy place. Most people there live in poverty! Your culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than Chinese, and absolutely no JAPANESE influence whatsoever.

People in Japan and China, do not act like you. They do not constantly talk about sex and they have a MUCH HIGHER level of RESPECT for each other. There is NO WAY that you can connect yourself to Asia other than location. Your culture and technological advancement does not even come
CLOSE to What Chinese, people have done in the past and what Japanese and Korean people are doing now! Everything you do is distinctly Filipino. You cannot take credit for Japanese cars, video games, or Hentai! It's not an "Asian thing" it's, an "American thing".

You have no concept of culture. No concept of Asian ideas or Asian philosophy! Can you demonstrate how you use Confucianism or Taoism in you everyday life?? You can't. And you will NEVER be able to. I understand that you are trying to create an identity for yourselves as young people... but it is NOT related to Asia. Your Identity is
Filipino. That's all you are. Just Filipino. Think about what that means....

Sincerely,
Art

******************************************

I find this funny, he is right in some ways where we, as Filipinos don't actually have an "Identity". I think this is due to the confusion of our mixed races from Hispanic, Chinese, American and Malay origins. I see it in malls, imagine young generations wearing ski caps and ski goggles in a tropical country, baggy low rise pants like that of African Americans living in the Bronx of New York, not to mention endless whitening products being sold at department stores and drug stores.

But his ignorance also blinds him from the other truth. That while we may glorify Anime shows and Japanese Internet gaming, he is not aware that a nameless Filipino may be responsible for some technical aspects of some Japanese software. He is not aware of our contribution to the the society in general. Technological advancements that may have aided post war navigations and landing on the moon. That the antibiotic Erythromycin was discovered by Dr. Abelardo Aguilar from Iloilo creating the brand "Ilosone".

Thomas Edison may have discovered the electric light bulb and the fluorescent lighting was thought up by Nikola Tesla. But the fluorescent lamp we use today was invented by Agapito Flores (a Cebuano named Benigno Flores of Bantayan Island, according to the Philippine Daily inquirer), a Filipino scientist. Americans helped then-Philippine leader Ramon Magsaysay to develop it for worldwide commerce. That the personal physician of former U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton is Eleanor "Connie" Concepcion Mariano, a Filipina doctor who was the youngest captain in the US Navy. A Filipino writer Jose Rizal could read and write at age 2, and grew up to speak more than 20 languages, including Latin, Greek, German, French and Chinese. Or that a Filipino genius was responsible for the near hiatus in the PENTAGON and White HOuse nearly
infiltrating their closely guarded secrets with the "ILOVEYOU" bug.

Nuisance maybe, but still one heck of a 'beautiful mind' not to be underestimated.

The list goes on and on, but who cares right? Certainly not Mr. Art Bell... Boy, I'm not surprised.

Perhaps Art Bell does not know that although we consider ourselves as ASIAN because we are strategically located in the Southeast Asian region of which our nearest neighbors are Malays, ASIA does not mean only Chinese and Japanese race of people. Then maybe it is his connotation that "Asia" meant only our economically successful, paler brothers and he considers Malays such as Thais, Malaysians, Indonesians, and ourselves as a "Third World" race. Then it is "his" ignonimity that would make a civilized person of whatever race puke. Imagine literally
connecting Chinese, Koreans and Japanese to the Philippine Islands which is archipelagos away from the countries he has mentioned.

I also wonder where he got the impression that we aspire to be Japanese (???) Hispanics maybe but not the Japanese. But even Hispanics today do not mind sharing their "surnames" to their Asian brothers who they have
colonized for 3 centuries. Another sad reality that although most Filipinos working overseas are domestic helpers and prostitutes, who does he think educates the toddlers of Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Tokyo? Parents of these countries rarely have time spent with their children, leaving them to their Filipino nannies. And with regards to prostitution. Filipinos are not the only ones working as one. I hardly see Filipinos starring in porn movies. There might be a few Filipinos we haven't seen, but most are from Mr. Art Bell's race.

He also mentioned that we have no concept of culture..no concept of Asian ideas or Asian philosophy. How can we demonstrate Confucianism or Taoism in a Christian nation? Is he informed that the Philippines is the only predominantly Christian / Catholic nation in Asia? Now who's teaching who?..

We do not need to create an identity for ourselves. We are who we are. Our identity stems from the anonymity we live in this world. How we contribute silently towards the progress of the world and not just one country. Although the Filipino blood may be tainted with malice, corruption, poverty and prostitution, it is not a perfect race... But so are the others.

Maybe Mr. Art Bell needs to think about this.

i've read this na rin sa bulletin ko sa friendster. and i was very intrigued by the man, so what i did was nagresearch ako. actually po, this hate letter was around mga 1998 pa or earlier and this was not written by Art Bell himself. someone was just using his name, ewan kung may galit talaga sa ting mga pinoy at ginamit name ni mr. bell or gusto lang talagang siraan siya na nataon na tayo yung pinatutungkulan ng letter. nagdemanda pa nga sya dati sa Inquirer kc nga pinublish nila ito ng hindi muna inaalam kung totoo ba or hindi. ewan ko lng kng ano na talaga nangyari dun sa case, 1999 pa ata yun. also, the man's wife is a Filipina. peace guys...

I just read about this 2 days ago and I was really hurt.I also did some researching on the net about Mr. Art Bell and I found out that it's a hoax.
Well,I really do not know if it was really him or if it was someone else. Could also be true that it was someone who hates him and as he's married to a Filipina so that person wanted to destroy him and his wife.
Well, in some ways it may be true that we Filipinos dont have an identity. It's because of the colonization of the Spanish and the Americans and the occupation of the Chinese in our country.
It is really a factor why we dont have an identity.
I also feel sad about this. I am married to a Portuguese and I'm living in Portugal and almost everyone that I know here in Portugal thinks the Filipinos has lost their culture and dont really have an identity. For one, look at our names. Here in Portugal, when you register your baby, you are given a book where you choose the name for your baby. You are not allowed to put a foreign name for the baby. When I first heard about it, I was quite angry coz I was not used to this as in the Philippines, we can give any name that we want. But then after awhile, I realized that its logical coz they just want the baby to have a Portuguese identity. If a baby is carrying a foreign name, how will the people know right away that she's a Portuguese ?? But if she's carrying a Portuguese name, everywhere she goes , she'd be recognized as a Portuguese because of her name.
Most Portuguese even say that as majority of the Filipinos have a Spanish FAMILY name, we should have just retained having Spanish FIRST names instead of putting English FIRST names. They also always find it weird whenever they see my name in my documents that I have a Spanish middle and last name but my name ( Ana Marie) is a mixture of Spanish and French. And that's why they always get confused. We are like some of the South Americans in Miami. But atleast for them, its more understandable coz they were born there but even so, most of them still retain having Spanish First names.
Being here in Europe has taught me a lot of things. Before when I was still in the Philippines, I was always fond of imported things. And I was not so patriotic. But now, that I'm away, I realized how much the Philippines and the culture means to me.
I realized how much we Filipinos have lost our culture.Sad but true,we are not like the chinese and japanese coz we dont really stick to our culture anymore. We always like to follow what the Americans do,what they eat, their songs, their styles, their expressions. It's pathetic.
When a tourist comes to our country, he/she cannot see so much of our culture coz most things are so Americanized. Its good that in some ways, we still have some of our culture retained, like the big and expensive fiestas, misa de gallo and restaurants that require to eat with the hands.Atleast that.
We can have our own identity and have our culture back if we stop following the Americans and give importance to our being Filipinos.
We dont have to follow their lifestyle, their fashion, their expressions, their movies, their hip hop songs. And we dont have to give an english name for our baby especially if the baby is a pure filipino and really look filipino.
Now that I realized about this and how logical it is, I feel sad that in our country it is really true that we Filipinos dont really have an identity.
Talking about Identity, I'm sorry that I'm writing in English instead of Filipino. My Filipino is not so good as I am an Ilongga and
non Filipinos cannot understand Filipino.
For us Filipinos, we should be proud of our origin, our country and our culture. When you come to Europe, you'd be surprised to see how much they love their own culture especially the ones from Latin countries (Spain, Italy, France, Romania and Portugal.Even if they can speak English, they wouldnt even bother to talk to you in English. That's how proud they are of their language.

The Art Bell Filipino Hate Letter (see: http://pula.ph/?article=art_bell_hates_filipinos )

SUMMARY: This is a malicious hoax attempting to discredit popular paranormal radio talk show host Art Bell. Art Bell did not write this letter.

Update: The Art Bell hoax recently gained additional infamy when an Inquirer Entertainment writer published the email in her column without first verifying the hoax. She has since retracted the article and apologized.

Artbell.com has also put out a "rebuttal text-message" to pass around in response to the spread of the rumor.

thanks for sharing. i want u to know that throughout the globe there is discrimination not only towards our kababayan but also other non-white people. there is a website there and you can read more about it tirled "Hate Crime on The Rise" at http://www.karisable.com/crhate.htm . Did you know here in Canada that people of colour are facing racial profiling. I invite you to visit and share this with people you know of a memorial website, http://www.reodica.com/jeff , for my late 17 yr-old nephew who was shot 3x in the back at point blank range by an undercover KKKop. This is an example of how others judge us and have no regard for pur existence. Right now we are fighting to get justice for Jeffrey which should ultimately be a justice for all! Let me know what you think of the website and its' contents/topics.

We're now in the year 2005 and I still can't believe that this "HATE LETTER AGAINST FILIPINOS" is still being circulated around the web. This hoax email has been circulating since 1990s. I have received this letter years ago. So, out of my curiousity, I researched about the article, whether or not Mr. Art Bell really did write about the letter. To my consolation, I came across a few websites that stated the facts that Mr. Art Bell DID NOT WRITE this letter according to the statements issued by his lawyers. Unfortunately, the Philippine Daily Inquirer made a mistake of printing this hoax letter. In 2001, Bell sued Philippine Daily Inquirer after the newspaper published the email as fact. The Inquirer published a retraction and apologized to Bell.
So, guys, it's not really a good thing to believe every forwarded email you receive in your inbox. Do make sure that you find things out for yourself so that others will be spared. And by the way, how could Art Bell write such a hurtful letter when his wife RAMONA is of FILIPINO descent... : )

in fact, this is really true. however there is also exemnption to this fact. we can say that some and not all the filipino people have this character. for the accuracy of this, we can take a research not by giving a mere speculation and judging through some of the consequences. he (art) should live in the philippines for a period of time to observe and study our culture before making giving judgement. i thought this is a judgement?..for your information (art) we filipinos have also our own identity...im proud to be a filipino...till then...

Dear Racist,
I AM a filipino and proud of it. We will outshine
all races but please don't fear us. We are just a
simple being that you will never understand you fool!
Try thinking more clearly and you will understand
that
filipinos will dominate in the most EFFICIENT way.
In terms
of technology someday you will hate that
word 'technology'!!
If you keep hating us..(I am sure)

Filipino,
Some fool just lit a spark on us all.. let's show them who we are!!! : n a u g h t y :

"Filipinos have begun to infest the United States like some sort of disease".- Oh
com'on people like you ART BELL infest the american soil and drive off the true
americans (indians) who live there for thousands of years! You are the true pest
and you didn't even know about it. We filipinos are the pest of the pest.
Now you will feel what the american indians felt. Good for you!
"You may notice that contemporary Filipino Americans try very hard to associate
themselves with groups that we know as Asian." - I think this ART BELL guy has a mental illness! This phrase really indicates that he has a misleading Generalization.
Filipinos hate Japanese (who murder many filipinos during WW2) and specially those chinesse (the necessary EVIL in our country).
"Philippines is a Third World country." - Always calling us third world. But we will never starve nor bully another country for resources. Just imagine an archipelago (composed of many island) country. I mean most of our land is near the seashore! Our
climate is tropical. Our land has many volcanic activities. We got potential my friend!
We can live without technology. Just think about it. We can be self dependent if we want to. And just think about your country without technology! And it will be catastrophic! Consider that!

“Nothing respectable has EVER been created by Filipino
people during our entire human history” – Hey idiot you need to update your old brain. Do I have to remind people like you.
“They often take credit
for the ingenuity of Japanese people and say how
it's an "Asian thing".” – And who gave us the credit? What the hell are ARTISTIC BELL are you talking about. Generalization again? This guy must be nuts.
“Filipinos are heavily discriminated
against.” – simply because people like ART BELL still exist. People who discriminate are the ones who fears. Keep fearing and you will have the ART BELL mental illness.
“Nothing in Filipino Culture can be seen as Asian.” – Hey study more about continents. You ART BELL have the narrowest point of view ever. Japanese and Chinese is not THE ASIA they are part of it.
“They have no architectural, artistic, or cultural
influence which is in ANY way, asian.” – So ART BELL declares the Philippine as the new continent. Good! So this means we are unique. That’s the mystery of the Filipino.
“There might have been some distant contact With
China and even less with Japan during World War
II, but these people are actually more closely
related to african americans and Mexican
americans.” – ART BELL what kind of contact do you mean. The Chinese actually lives in our country. NO african americans and Mexican here. Don’t ever look down upon those people. For they have more self worth more than you can only imagine! They are the one that has something to live and a great sense of purpose. You will never understand what I say until its too late…

“Recognizing your Roots (A Message to Filipinos).
Please recognize your ROOTS! You come from the
Third World! You country is a disgusting and filthy
place. Most people there live in poverty! Your
culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than
chinese, and absolutely no JAPANESE influence
whatsoever. People in Japan and China, do not act
like you.
” – Yes we know our roots infact you said PART OF IT. We are just a naturally fun loving people. Why do you constantly compare us to Japan and Chinese. You can’t compare us with them
because we have our unique identity.
“They do not constantly talk about sex and
they have a MUCH HIGHER level of RESPECT for
each other. There is NO WAY that you can
connect yourself to Asia other than location.” – ART BELL don’t talk about RESPECT if you don’t know about it!
“Your culture and technological advancement does
no! t even come CLOSE to What Chinese, people
have done in the past and what Japanese and
Korean people are doing now!” – I think you are right. Give us the fund and we will
Create those advancement you want. Coz we can. Even better than them. Do you want proof then give us all the fund.
“Can you demonstrate how you
use Confucianism or Taoism in you everyday life??” – ART BELL we are generally Christians! Happen to have freedom. We don't have serial killers.
“I understand that you are trying to create an
identity for yourselves as young people... but it is
NOT related to Asia. Your Identity is Filipino.
That's all you are. Just Filipino. Think about what
that means....” – You just misunderstand us ART BELL. We don’t create identity but instead identity is recognized. Recognize your identity ART BELL to find out how rude you are. Our identity is Filipino but you will never understand our complexity. If you want to understand Filipino then have a true filipino friend. Maybe you will understand us. You must also consider the environment that those Filipinos are facing. Because Filipinos have the instinct of survival and self-worth like all human. Our brain is just a tool to recognize knowledge and understand phenomenon in time and place. Don’t let your hate misleads you. Coz hate can alter the pattern of your brain. Where it seems that you are right but for others you are weird. Open your eyes………Godbless.. : r a z z :

Update: Art Bell's wife, Romona, passed away last year. He recently married another Filipino lady and now lives in the Philipines. They are both horrified that the hateful letter once falsely attributed to him has recently been re-published in The Bohol Chronicle there. Whoever wrote that disgusting hoax letter is obviously a bigot of the worst order. Mr. Bell is not a bigot and did not write that letter.

I'm not Filipino, guys--I just wanted to let you know that you're flaying the wrong person. Art Bell LIKES Filipinos and the Philipines.

A letter like this hoax was meant to hurt many people, including Mr. Bell. It burns to read stuff like that, but brush it off like you would a fly. The person who wrote that pathetic letter is too narrow of mind to be credible. He has serious issues about women, it seems to me. He also seems a bit facist. He's the type of person you could talk to for hours but he wouldn't hear you. Waste not a single moment in anger, because the author of that letter has enough anger for all of us. Don't take stuff like that personally--refuse that anger and give it back to the man (or woman) who so obviously lashes out to punish. He seems very unhappy. So remain happy and let the SOB stew. Wonderful comments above, btw, (the ones I could read :-]). Just direct all that energy toward the real author of that letter, not Mr. Bell. He broadcasts from the Philipines on Saturday and Sunday nights (daytime there). Tune it in sometime - Coast to Coast AM. Some of his guests are far-out, but he listens to each one and never puts anyone down. You'll see that he is definitely not the type of person who would write such narrow-minded stuff.
The Coast to Coast website is:

Love and light to you all,

Kate

Wall of text.: b o o k :

I wikied the man,and learned that she has a Filipina wife and a FilAm daughter. That led me to a conclusion that there is no way that he could have written that hate mail himself.Although the possibility that he was indeed responsible for this letter,I will not throw mud to someone unless there is substantial amount of evidence leading to his guilt.: r o l l :

Remember Jacque Bermejo? So many hatred,so many curses, yet a simple clarification or truth cant be produced. If only Filipinos would stop, think about the possibilities, and do not pass early judgment, then we as human beings will not have any hatred against each other.

Why hate when you can love,forgive,and care? : s m i l e :

I always thought that there was this one perfect person for everybody in the world, you know, and when you found that person the rest of the world kind of magically faded away, and, you know, the two of you would just be inside this kind of protective bubble, but there is no bubble, I mean if there is you have to make it, I just think life is more than a series of moments, you know, we can make choices, and we can choose to protect the people we love, and that's what makes us who we are and those are the real memories.
